Miss Ava Jane | Birthday Part I

05/14/2011 - 7 Responses

We’re nearly settled in our new house and what way to kick it off with a birthday party! Our daughter, Ava, turned 3 years old this past Sunday and we started her off with a breakfast fit for a princess! She is very much a princess and loves everything that comes along with it, so what better way than to have a tea party! This tea set was handed down to me from my Mom by my Great Grandma, Babi, from Czechoslovakia. We had hot chocolate, creme, sugar cubes and a chocolate sprinkled doughnut topped with a fresh strawberry! Part I of her big day brings you right up to the blowing of the candles.
Hope you enjoy the pure joy from the eyes of a young princess.

Stay tuned for Part II of Ava’s Birthday! Here is a peek of what’s ahead:

 Thanks for looking!

With all the storms and rain we’ve had the kids were feeling a little cooped up. So they put on their “farm boots” (that’s what they call em), we bagged our camera, and went out in the rain for some fun.

And yes, they have Cheetos all over their faces 🙂

Louisville Family Photographer : Hearts Apart – Townsend Family

04/07/2011 - Leave a Response

We are proud to announce that we have just partnered with the amazing organization Through the efforts of and Veritas Photography, we will provide our soon to be deployed servicemen and women with pictures of their family and loved ones. We are so excited to be helping out our country in this small way.

The Hearts Apart program speaks to me (Will) personally. As a former military brat, my father served his country in the Marine Corps and was deployed on several occasions-once to the Middle East to fight during first Persian Gulf war. I remember during those times (before email and digital cameras) that the only things I had to remember my father by while he was deployed, were a couple of photos.

A simple photo of a loved one can be a powerful connection even across vast distances.

We had a fun time with Jason and Rebecca. They didn’t even mind when we drove to a random field to get some fun shots.

Thank you Jason and Godspeed, you are in our prayers.

Liam has officially started participating in the great American past time.

He had his first day of Tee Ball practice last night and was a little nervous of the other kids, but later said he had a great time.

A little warm up with mom 🙂

Poor little guy was so nervous he didn’t know which way to face.

Mom to the rescue

nice arm!

Liam and his famous “Fish Face”. He does it when he’s nervous.

Up to bat!

Little guy wasn’t sure where the bases were, so Lyss had to help him out.

Ava is a little too young to play, but we bought her a glove anyway.

She found a flower that she said I had to smell

Thanks for taking a look!

I write this evening with a heavy heart. Last weekend my friend Kyle Stucky passed away.

For those of you who were fortunate to know Kyle he undoubtedly touched your life in some way.

Kyle was a classmate, teammate, and a friend and he will be greatly missed.

We at Veritas Photography would like to offer the Stucky family our deepest sympathies in their time of need.

Throughout the month of April, Veritas Photography will be donating proceeds from our sessions to the Stucky family. Our hope is that this will in some small way help this family during this dark time. For more information contact us at

Rest in Peace Kyle, you will be missed

Thank you

Louisville Wedding Photographer – File Types 101

03/28/2011 - Leave a Response

Welcome back everyone. This week we will be taking a look at RAW and JPEG file formats.

Alright, we have taken a fairly in-depth look at exposure and what happens when you press the shutter. But, we have yet to discuss the file formats your camera is capable of recording your images into and the pros and cons of those formats.

After you capture an image, your camera records your picture onto your memory card. It typically records this data in one of two ways; either as a RAW file or as a JPEG file. I’m sure many of you have read or heard of these two formats before, but unless you understand the differences between the two it may be confusing to decide whether to shoot in RAW, or JPEG.

JPEG stands for Joint Photographers Expert Group. I know, the name really doesn’t help anyone understand what it is, but it’s always good to know. A JPEG file is a lossy format that has been compressed either in camera or in computer. A lossy compression is a type of compression that shrinks file sizes by discarding data (image information) in favor of minimizing the resulting size of the file. The camera and computer have been programed to do this discarding a pretty sophisticated way. It allows the image to remain in relatively high quality, but still small enough to take up little space on a memory card. There are drawbacks to this compression however. Every time you open and close a JPEG image your computer must uncompress  and re-compress the image. This constant compression can degrade an image over time.

A RAW file is an uncompressed image file. These file types take data directly from the image sensor and process them directly to the memory card. This type of uncompressed image transfer results in a much greater file size, but also in greater file quality. A RAW file maintains its quality through unlimited openings and closings and gives you the most accurate image quality directly from the camera.

Below are some short helpful videos courtesy of Binary Graphite to further explain.

As Imre explained, RAW files do take further processing in order to get them to a useful format. You must convert a RAW file into another format (JPEG, GIF, PNG, PDF) before it can either be printed, or uploaded to the internet. Furthermore not any software can be used to do so. On the market today you will find several different RAW processing programs, but the two main programs released by Adobe are Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) and Adobe Lightroom. Both programs are relatively easy to learn and offer a near limitless way to edit your photos. They also have a rather large following a community of users, so help and presets are easy to come by.

I hope this posts helps those of you who may have been a little confused by the RAW and JPEG
